Album Jealousy
Year 1990
Tracks 10
Rating 1? of 5
by RoseMoon
This was the first X album I've ever heard, and quite frankly, I was
disappointed. Going back and forth with the tough-male-like songs
coupled with the romantic ballads was cheesy. There were very few bright
spots, but just enough to give the half star. I actually quite liked
Toshi's rough, raw singing, and Yoshiki's piano playing and drumming
because they added bits and pieces of creativity, however little, in
their own way. Even though it isn't saying much, this album represents a
band that plays just your typical late 80s/early 90s big-haired rock.
1. Es Dur
Such a creative and beautiful beginning to this album. Unfortunately, it
is one of the very few bright spots. Yoshiki begins with his fingers
tapping along the piano, and then a sweet melody of violins seeps in.
The ending is breakdown into low notes, which is cool.
2. Silent Jealousy
A complete ballad. I enjoy the piano introduction, and the fast-paced
drumming. The hard guitaring doesn't impress me much.. however, it's
skillfully good. Toshi's voice is raw, with some annoying English, which
is typical, I think, for these big hair rock bands. The term 'big
hair rock band' is what this song makes me think of.
3. Miscast
This has to be one of the most annoying songs on the album. Toshi's
voice is fast, scratchy, and somewhat enjoyable.. but.. what's this?
Background testosterone-filled vocals!! Scary..
4. Desperate Angel
I can't help that this song reminds me of Spinal Tap. This guitar line
sounds very similar to the last song, and is just not that interesting
with the frequent outbursts of "Desperate Angel!" The English lyrics are
pretty amusing, but it could do without the background vocals, though.
5. White Wind From Mr. Martin
One of the lighter songs of this album. The acoustic guitar introduction
is upbeat, and a little refreshing, but also very short.
6. Voiceless Screaming
A sad (and a little trite) love ballad with English lyrics, acoustic
guitar and violin. This song is much better than some certain tracks
because it's not haunted with those horrible background vocals.
Toshi's voice has some amount of passion, which helps with the feeling
of the track.
7. Stab Me In The Back
Probably the worst song on the album. Lyrically, just deplorable, not to
mention that they're also English. The guitaring is fast and
exhausting, but boring. Again, the shouting vocals in the background are
too much. The band is trying too hard to be 'tough-boy'ish in this
song, and it's getting annoying.
8. Love Replica
This song is different from the rest of the tracks. Musically, it's much
more engaging, and the French spoken word is nice. I like that it's
lnger and all instrumental. Actually, it reminds me of video game
music a little bit. It's a nice break from Travesty Track #7.
9. Joker
The progression of these so-called "hard-rock" guitar lines are all
starting to sound the same. It's surprising how they go from Love
Replica to this. This song holds very little interest, so let's move
on..
10. Say Anything
Sweet, hopelessly romantic song to end the album. Well, I suppose one
romance ballad should end to help compensate for the rest of the album,
but it's just a little too trite, and maybe too late, as well
