After playing guitar for X Japan for six years, hide (self-deceased in
1998) released his first solo work, the singles EYES LOVE YOU and 50%
and 50% in 1993. Afterwards he would release one more single, and
finally in 1994, released his first solo album, HIDE YOUR FACE. The
album has sounds of Hard Rock and screaming by hide, I would have to say
this was the fastest and hardest rock he ever released. I feel though
as if his first solo work is somewhat of a disappointment, when I
heard the album, I guess I was expecting so much, at the time I had only
heard his second album, PSYENCE. Now, because I don't think this
album is just so amazing, it doesn't mean that some of the songs are
great. The songs on this album that are good, are VERY good. The ones
that are not so good, are just plain bad. Musically, the album is very
repetitive, on a lot of the tracks I just thought that it was almost the
same song, only different lyrics. The album is decent, but if you are
wanting to know what the hell all the commotion about hide being god
(well, what most fans think) is about, I would recommend listening to
PSYENCE.
1. PSYCHOMMUNITY
This track is great, it starts out with a slow guitar intro by hide,
then leads into the drums starting. It's completely instrumental like
all of hide's albums begin; this is the best of the instrumental
tracks he did. Whenever I listen to the song I think of ROCKY for some
reason, I get really pumped up whenever I listen to this song.
2. Dice
The second single for the album, very good as well. This is a good
follow up to PSYCHOMMUNITY. The guitar by hide in this song is so cool
as well; it really stands out to show how great of a guitarist he was.
The crazy guitar by hide is continued throughout most of the song,
it's what really makes this song. hide's voice switches tones here and
there, towards the end we have some screaming. It's not really hard,
it's somewhat tame compared to the rest of the album.
3. SCANNER
Okay now, didn't I just hear this tune in DICE? It sounds like DICE only
it was speeded up about 10x faster. The voice of hide in this song goes
from hard to screaming. The little midtro they have in the song
sounds like something that has been reused so many times. I usually
don't listen to this track if I'm skimming through different tracks on
the album. It's hard, but it's dull.
4. EYES LOVE YOU
Every time I listen to this song I want to fall asleep! I can't bare
to listen to this song that often; this has always been my least
favorite song by hide. The lyrics are written by Yukinojo Mori, I really
prefer hide's writing much more then this. It's another softer song
on the album, hide's voice tries to get somewhat dramatic in this, but
it just doesn't work. There is absolutely no feeling or emotion in
this whatsoever, it's pitiful. Although this did win the viewer's choice
award at the MTV Music Video Awards. But then again, that's coming from
a country where they don't care if the song is good or bad, just the
fact of who sang it. I'll probably get my testicles ripped off for
blasting the song, because I know many fans like it, but I don't.
5. D.O.D. [Drink or Die]
Another boring and stupid track. If you want to hear how annoying hide's
voice can be, listen to this track. His voice sounds like a fly, I
usually like it, but on this track it just gets really annoying. The
music is nothing interesting. The only fun thing about this song is when
hide sings it LIVE, he has security guards get on stage and chug
drinks.
6. CRIME OF BREEN ST.
This is pointless, it's about a minute long and has little sounds here
and there. I don't understand why it's even on this album.
7. DOUBT - Remix Version -
Don't let the title fool you, it's not a remix, only a few changes, only
noticeable if you listen to the song 24/7. This is one of the better
songs on the album; it's actually incredible. Like I said earlier, the
songs that are good are very good. The emotion that tried to be shown in
EYES LOVE YOU was a flop, if you want to hear hide get all out with his
music, listen to this song, it's amazing. The song is very hard and
fast. The guitars, drums, and bass are going at hard beats the entire
song, and it keeps your attention. This is one of his most popular songs
as well, remixed constantly; this is the first remix (the original
was a b-side on 50% and 50%).
8. A STORY
Absolutely beautiful, that is the first impression on this song.
Definitely one of hide's best! Lyrically and musically the song is a
treasure. It's short, but that doesn't take away from it at all.
Acoustic guitars and light drumming, another one of the softer tracks on
the album.
9. FROZEN BUG '93
After the soft sounds of A STORY, we are now taken into Frozen Bug, an
uncreative, boring, and annoying song. The song is in English, but at
the time, hide's English was not so genuine, so I had to read the lyrics
to follow along. The song is very raunchy, about sex and hangovers. The
music reminds me of repetitive Australian Death Metal music, and the
tune is somewhat re-used from X Japan's live version of Orgasm. hide's
voice is at his worst here, his low tone screaming with the raunchy
lyrics, I understand what he was trying to accomplish, but it just
wasn't working for me. This track was later remixed by his English
group, Zilch, with Lords of Acid, called Fuctrack #6.
10. T.T. GROOVE
After the sucky sounds of Frozen Bug, we have a thirty-second track,
hard guitars and drums for about ten seconds then it fades out and
it's over. It's a little interesting, but nothing to cry home about. I
am truly not a big fan of thirty-second tracks in the middle of an
album. Thirty-second songs can take away from the effect of a CD.
11. Blue Sky Complex
A new turn on the album, swing music. I liked this song so much that I
named my JRock site after it. It's very cool, the elements of all the
songs on the album so far are somewhat mixed into this song, but done in
swing style. The style is used again in hide's next album PSYENCE
with the opening track, PSYENCE. The song changes pace a lot too which
is a key to hide's future of working with different styles, and making
them work.
12. OBLAAT
The song opens with a cheesy little bass intro and drums. I kind of like
this song, but it's not the best he has done. The little voices going
"du du du du" annoy me. I feel like I'm in some old Milli Vanilli album.
The song is fun, but fun isn't always meaning its great.
13. TELL ME
This song is okay, I was never to keen on this songs raggae style. The
lyrics to the song are actually great, but the music is what makes me
not like the song to well. Lyrics play an important part in music, but I
can't judge a song by lyrics alone. The best part of the song is hide's
guitar solo, which is actually pretty cool. He always has the most
awesome solos. To my surprise, the TELL ME 2000 version of this song
is one of my favorite songs by hide.
14. HONEY BLADE
The fact that hide says Honey Blade in this song gets to me, it's gets
to my nerves really bad when I hear him say it, he just doesn't sing
it right. The music is somewhat dull; the riff is continued through
the entire song, over and over again for four and a half minutes. Song
never changes pass at all, very very dull and boring.
15. 50% and 50% (Crystal Lake Version)
ACK! I really liked the single 50% and 50%, I wish they would have
left it on the album, but instead we get this remix which sounds like it
was written by Sparky Joe and the Stoned Rednecks. I get this awful
picture of hide and Pata dressed up like hicks sitting on the porch of a
cabin surrounded by nasty descendents of the Beverly Hillbillies. Thank
god about four minutes into the song they skip to the original sound of
the single, but that only lasts a minute until the song ends.
16. PSYCHOMMUNITY EXIT
Okay, on PSYENCE and Ja Zoo, the instrumental endings were pretty cool.
But on here, we get the riff from PSYCHOMMUNITY, this one little bit,
used over and over again for about six minutes. Then we wait almost
twelve minutes, and hear a drum set as if the drummer was done playing
and it's the end. hide is very weird, and to end an album like this
shows it. I don't even bother to listen to this track.
