Album Psyence
Year 1996
Tracks 16
Rating 5 of 5
by Bruce Osborne
My first and best exposure to hide. This is a re-vamped version of an
earlier and very shitty review that I had written before. hide has a
very unique and complex style, and it is a style that will remain an
inspiration for music generations to come. This album, Psyence, which
was released in 1996, is much better then the highly disappointing debut
album of hide two years earlier, Hide Your Face. While Hide Your Face
was catchy and it did have its deal of great memorable songs, it just
had too much of the same feeling to it, and got boring at times. Here
hide (who plays guitar and bass on the album, I.N.A. is like his
assistant at recording) has a neat style of punk mixed with hard rock,
pop, and even jazz.
1. PSYENCE
A great song to open the album, as you can see it is the title track.
The song is like a tribute to the old James Bond spy films, or that is
how I feel when I listen to it. After about 90 seconds this song
really starts to kick in. hide has a very cool little guitar solo
towards the end, which leads into what you are going to be in for on
this album.
2. ERASE
Starts out with a cool guitar and goes into a nice and somewhat hard
melody. The guitar progression on this song is very cool and I enjoy
it a lot. The chorus here is really cool with hide's slight aggressive
voice. The solo after the first chorus is just too cool.
3. Genkai Haretsu
One of the more memorable hide songs. Starts out with a cool guitar
melody and slight drums with hide singing kind of softly and goes into
an awesome guitar riff which builds into the chorus. The chorus has some
of the best guitar work on the album, as well as vocal work. Definitely
one of my favorites.
4. DAMAGE
Starts out with a hard bass and goes into hide screaming in English "You
took the best parts of my life." This is the first of the few hard rock
songs on the album. The screaming by hide is so cool as well, while
it is still aggressive and hard, it still has a very neat melody to it.
5. LEMONed I Scream
At first, I really did not care for this song at all, I thought it was
cheesy, dull, and just way to poppy for my tastes for hide. But after
listening to the full album, I realized that this song is meant to be
cheesy, and while the lyrics (which are in English) absolutely make no
sense, it still has that crazy hide-ness to it, after all he was a nut,
and this song kinda brings that out, which may sound like a ball of
cheese as well.
6. Hi-Ho
The song almost sounds like a mix of raggae mixed with rock, this was
done earlier on Hide Your Face with the song Tell Me. The song has
that uplifting feel to it, but yet has that aggressive style that hide
is famous for mixing with songs such as this. This was released as a
double a-side single with Good-Bye after the release of the album.
7. FLAME
This ballad, which is in half-English and half-Japanese, gives hide
won of the most emotional sounds that he was ever able to achieve with
his vocals and his writing with the music (i feel that Pink Spider was
the most out-done he did). It starts out with a slow guitar riff, and
goes into a slow yet somewhat hard melody. During the verses of the
song, the highlight is the bass; it really gives the song more of that
dramatic effect.
8. Beauty & Stupid
Back to the more punk rock, and guess what, it was a single, anyways...
starts out with a fast melody, this isn't one of the better songs, but
doesn't mean it is not great. Here I think it somewhat shows how hide
was kind of ahead of his time. The guitars here are great yet again, the
drums are fun, overall a great song.
9. Oedo Cowboys
This short instrumental track reminds me of the old west films and
television series'. The guitar sounds like an updated version of
something that would be on the Wild Wild West (no not that shitty
version with Will Smith).
10. Bacteria
Starts out with a fast guitar and goes into a strange and freaky melody,
and when the drums kick in you know you're in for something hard and
fast, and BOOM! The hard guitars, drums, and bass set to hide's
screaming voice brings back memories of the classic song Doubt. The song
is long, almost six minutes, but the song changes its melody here and
there and keeps it very interesting.
11. Good-Bye
After hearing such a hard and fast song, we are set now with the most
memorable ballad hide ever did, Good-Bye. It's a very slow and sad song,
and it goes on like this for about two minutes. A very amazing guitar
solo comes in from hide. The song gives me such a weird feeling inside,
and it is songs like this that make his fans miss him.
12. Cafe Le Psyence
Here is the tune of the first track, Psyence, only set to a bass and
piano as if it were in a Cafe, cool middle track. I'm not usually a
big fan of tracks this short in the middle of an album, but here it is
nice.
13. LASSIE (demo master version)
This is a very neat and fun punk song by hide. It's simple and catchy;
it actually took a while for this song to grow on me. The weird things
hide can do with his voice, it is so cool in here. The barking is a nice
and funny effect to the song as well.
14. POSE
Has a weird ping pong game going on that starts being played to the beat
of the song which is very cool. This is the last of the harder rock
songs on the album. It has one of my favorite lyrics to any hide song,
"Everyone wants to be somebody, it's nothing more than common sense.
Everyone needs to be somebody, where's the common sense in that." The
added in piano to the craziness of the song is a cool add-on to it.
15. MISERY (remix version)
Not really a remix, just has an added on opening. Anyways, this is the
song that I feel to be the best song on the entire album. The guitar
to this is so cool as well; it shows out how amazing and creative he was
on the guitar. This song makes me extremely miss hide, that he was
still here to be able to write more songs such as these.
16. Atomic M.O.M.
The outro track, has a weird sci-fi feel to it, and goes into a freaky
laugh. Then the song Psyence starts to play, only it sounds as if it
were in really low mono. After the first minute of Psyence plays thew it
goes into the laughing again. Neat track to end the album with.
And that ends it! Psyence by hide is by far my favorite album by hide,
and my favorite album of all time. I feel no other artist could have
made a work such as this, hide's skills are outdone here, truly outdone.
If you have not listened to hide yet, listen to this album, and see for
yourself to see if you feel the same.
