President of Shenzhen University
Sir,
I have been a foreign teacher in Shenzhen University for 4 years now, and
I will come back next year as I do every year. Sometimes Professor Gao invites
me for lunch. Sometimes Doreen, your assistant, comes with us.
Last week we had such a lunch with Judy and Hui from the International Affairs
Office. I was talking to Professor Gao about Shenzhen University when he told
me that I should write my impression to you; here it is.
Because of Globalization we live in a Global Village. You, as President, have
the responsability to administer the University and to prepare the students to
face the challenge of this Village. Not easy! You have reached this latter goal
by providing the students with courses in business ( I teach in the Economics
College) that are of international level ( I was using the same books when I
was a student; but now they contain a lot more material, of course.)
You provide the students with the opportunity to study abroad by having
agreements with international Universities in USA, U.K. and other countries;
also there are Universities which have special programs in our University. Each
year I see a lot of students going to do a Master degree in USA, Canada, UK,
etc. In the Economics College, we even have a student who, this year, will
finish her Master in Accounting in UK and will do a Doctor degree in Canada.
You also maintain close relations with a multitude of Universities around the
world; one can examine the list of those Universities on the SZ University
website. Each year many teachers from SZ University go abroad to visit
international Universities; also many foreign teacher or University
representatives come to our University. Like Dean Tao Yi Tao wrote:” We should
appreciate Diversity and learn from it.”
Last and not the least, you provide the students with many foreign teachers
(like me, not so young but with a lot of experience, and useful, hopefully!!!);
Professor Gao and the people in the International Affairs Office make sure that
they are qualified. This provides the students with a close relation with other
cultures.
Also you have a multitude of foreigners who come to your University to learn
Chinese. Last week a person from Philippine contacted me to know how to
register in Shenzhen University to learn Chinese.
All of this is done to make sure that Shenzhen University as the same standards
as any international University, and also to make sure the students are ready
for a competitive century and future. I am sure that you have other programs of
which I am not aware of to keep SZ University as an international University.
This is my opinion and I congratulate you and all the people of this University
for their hard work in reaching those goals.
If I may, I have a suggestion to make. In Canada we are brought up to be
careful about using energy and to save every penny on everything. I have
noticed that the price of electricity has recently gone up; also I have noticed
that the lights and the air conditioning system are often left on when there
are no classes or when classes have not begun.
I am sure that with a little effort from everybody, the University could save a
lot of money on energy; but it takes the collaboration of everyone. As for
myself, when my class is over, I close the computer, the lights and the
air-conditioning. It takes only a few seconds to do that.
This is only a suggestion; I dont know if it would be practical to do it but I
leave this decision to those who have the authority to make policies.
To finish I would like to tell you about an event that amazed me. Some months
ago, on a Saturday night, at around 11.30 pm, I was coming back from a meeting
with some Chinese and foreign friends; as I was passing by the new dorm being
built, I saw you with some other people inspecting the construction. Of course
I stopped to say Hello and talk to you a little. But in my mind I was amazed
that, so late, the President of a University would take the time to work when
he could be with his family and friends...Super responsible, I thought.
So congratulation on a beautiful University, following in the steps of a great
Chinese leader who has created Shenzhen.
